Principal Backend Engineer — Series C Fintech

Our client is a Series C fintech operating in real-time cross-border payments. Following a $90m raise, they are rebuilding their core ledger and payment orchestration platform — and they need a Principal Engineer to own the architecture.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll set the technical direction for a platform that processes several billion pounds in annual volume. The current system has scaled past its original design and the team is rebuilding around a new event-sourced architecture. You’ll lead that work hands-on.

Specifically, you’ll own the end-to-end design of the next-generation ledger; partner with the CTO to set engineering hiring and standards across a team of 18 engineers; lead the technical work on at least one critical service yourself; and act as the senior technical voice in conversations with regulators and partner banks.

What we’re looking for

We need someone who has built and operated distributed systems at scale — payments, ledgers, exchanges, or similarly demanding domains. You’ll have a deep understanding of consistency models, idempotency, and the failure modes that matter when money is moving in real time.

You’ll be a senior individual contributor by temperament, but with the gravity to influence technical strategy and the patience to mentor a team that includes several less experienced engineers.

The package

The base range is £140,000 to £175,000 with meaningful equity, full private healthcare, and pension at 8% employer contribution. Three days a week in their Liverpool Street office; remote on Mondays and Fridays.
